Our fourth annual “Share the Love” Hunger Fight on Saturday, Feb. 10 is an opportunity for our PowerLife students to serve together during a one-day meal packaging event. This jam-packed day will hopefully be a rewarding, hands-on experience for all of our students, leaders and parents!
Each PowerLife group has been assigned to a one-hour time slot during one of the following time frames:
- 6th grade: 9:30 am – noon
- 7th grade: noon – 2:30 pm
- 8th grade: 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Students are asked to arrive at Meals From the Heartland (357 Lincoln St., West Des Moines) a few minutes before their scheduled time to serve!
After a brief orientation, packagers will put on their hairnet; wash their hands; and prepare to scoop and pour rice, soy, veggies and vitamins into meal pouches that are weighed and placed into boxes. These pouches will be distributed to people who are hungry all around the world. A group of 8-12 volunteers can package approximately 1,250 meals in just one hour!
Each PowerLife group has already been registered for a one-hour time-slot to serve. You can see the full schedule by clicking here. If you don't know your child's group letter, please ask them. If they don't know, please email us.
On Wednesday, Jan. 31, each of our PowerLife students were given an empty meal pouch to bring home. This pouch can be used to collect a special offering. There is an insert inside the meal pouch with Scripture verses reminding students what the Bible says about giving ("We should give joyfully and not out of pressure, guilt, or shame." 2 Corinthians 9:7) along with details of how many meals each dollar donated can provide for a person in need. The students can include prayers in their donation as well. Once each student has decided how they would like to give, they will be asked to present their gifts at the altar the following week on Wednesday, Feb. 7 during the large group time of our PowerLife service. We will pray for the people who we will be serving during large group and small group time. Please help your child determine an offering they will be excited to give, and help prepare their hearts for this special event.
A large packaging event like this requires special support volunteers to ensure a smooth day. If you are able to help, we would love to have you join us! Please email Justin Stoffa to get more information.
If you would like to order a “This is My Fighting Hunger” T-shirt for your child to wear at our Share the Love event, they will be available for purchase on Wednesday, Feb. 7 before and after PowerLife. Each T-shirt purchased ($20) will fund 60 meals! All shirts are in adult sizes, so please take this into considerations when making your selection. Students just need to bring their cash/or check made payable to Meals From the Heartland to PowerLife on Feb. 7 to pick up their shirt!
