Murph Hutson

Murph Hutson, Campus Pastor

Raised in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee, by default, Murph Hutson was Southern Baptist. He married a Presbyterian. So, naturally, he’s Lutheran now.

Murph’s faith journey has been one that sees God show up in unexpected ways. Moving to Iowa is a big example of God’s hand in Murph’s life. What Murph and his wife, Joy, thought was a great career move turned out to be so much more. Their two children, Joel and Camden, were born with cystic fibrosis, and Camden was also born deaf. Murph and Joy discovered that Iowa, not Tennessee, was testing newborns for cystic fibrosis, a key to health. They found themselves in a city with a cystic fibrosis clinic (rare), and two hours from one of the 11 research think tanks for cystic fibrosis – The University of Iowa – which also happens to be the top cochlear implant hospital in the country. What’s more, Murph and Joy found a church home they both love in Hope, a difficult feat given their upbringings. Joy sings in the Adoration Choir in the Chapel. Murph believes wholeheartedly that God’s hand has been all over his life.

At Hope, Murph felt God’s call to pastoral ministry. So, he left his 13-year high school mathematics teaching career to go to seminary. As Pastor Mike loves to say, “Murph looked at Jesus and saw that it all added up.” Murph is a graduate of Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was ordained with the ELCA and installed as a Campus Pastor at Hope Grimes. Murph is passionate about discipleship and helping others discover their Gospel identity. He also strives daily to encounter others through living out James 1:19, “…be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.”

Murph is big fan of the University of Tennessee Volunteers and the Denver Broncos (orange is his favorite color). And he’s been an Atlanta Braves fan all his life (even when they were terrible in the ’80s). Murph is an avid golfer and enjoys playing golf with his family and friends. In fact, Murph’s foursome has won the Taste of Hope Golf Outing four times.
