Serving the Homeless
Sundays with Joppa
On the first Sunday of each month, Hope provides volunteers and donations to assist in Joppa’s outreach efforts. Wherever unsheltered people are living, in and around Des Moines, volunteers visit with them – building relationships, providing survival supplies and helping with specific needs.
A small team of volunteers prepare 100 sandwiches per week for the Central Iowa Shelter. Another small team goes to CISS weekly, to prepare and serve sack lunches, which include sandwiches, bags of chips, fruit or applesauce, bags of cookies, or bottled water (all individually wrapped, single serving). Lutheran Church of Hope members prepare and serve a meal on the fourth of each month at Central Iowa Shelter and Services (1420 Mulberry Street in Des Moines). The menu usually includes one warm dish, side dish, fruit, bread and dessert. They also provide milk, juice, cereal, coffee, sugar, peanut butter, etc. each month.
